David Letterman welcomed the crew of
Flight 1549 to his show in February, 2009. The pilot who safely landed
his crippled jetliner in the Hudson River received another all-American
tribute along with some ribbing from Letterman. The story was told this
time with plenty of laughs. An example when Letterman mentioned a passenger who opened a door in the rear of the plane, letting water from the near-freezing river until it was closed again. Actually, most of the water was attributed to the fact that a hole was created in the tail on landing in the water. Sully jokingly replied: "I think it was Steve Martin who did that," referring to the comedian who had created a spoof video of exiting the plane and pushed several passengers into the water. When Letterman asked whether the Airbus A320 was designed to float, Sullenberger deadpanned: "We were very glad that this one remained intact and did." On a serious note, Sullenberger said the crew members, our copilot Jeffrey Skiles, flight attendants Sheila Dail, Donna Dent, and Doreen Welsh and my self have experienced some trouble sleeping, distractedness and flashbacks. Welsh (blond) said, "Still in shock, I think - I mean, I'm on the David Letterman Show." |

Exiting while the plane floats smoothly in a counter clockwise motion. It is 3:30 in the afternoon. One engine had broken off on impact. The gray images are video frames from a
Con Edison's 59th Street station steam plant. A person manning
their surveillance camera from inside the plant saw the
plane hit the water and redirected the camera. Location is marked in
map above.
