After graduating from Fennville High School
in 1952,
I moved to Chicago and married Cortez Hawkins, a former Covert, Michigan resident, in December of 1952. Our son and only child was born in March Of 1954. I worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for fifteen years, the City of Chicago Six years, and my final employment, twenty-two years with the United Way of Chicago. There I was Plan Administrator for Pension, LifeIDisability and Medical Plans for a group of social agencies. I received a B.A. degree from Mundelein College majoring in gerontology. Mundelein has been incorporated into Loyola University. |
| My son graduated from Cornell Law School.
He practiced law for five years and succumbed in 1983 from complications
of Crohn’s disease.
My husband was murdered in our motel in a robbery in December 1972. I had several surgeries also from complications of Crohns disease. Horace Cantrell Jr. is my current husband. We reside in Indianapolis, because he is the State Architect for Indiana. Nine years ago I retired from the United
Way to join my husband in Indiana. I was a substitute teacher for six years
and tutored for one year in Indiana. I volunteered daily for six years
at a nursing home.
