Alas,
Kurt’s formative years were not to continue between those speakers.
There came an interruption to the humdrum life on Norwood Drive.
First, Kurt’s father had accepted a position as chairman of the Chemistry
Department at Hillsdale (MI) College. Second, the Herbener family
was going to spend six weeks at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, where Kurt’s
dad would complete assembling credits for a second Master’s degree, one
entitled a Master’s of Science in Chemistry Teaching to be awarded by the
University of New Hampshire. At the close of the summer term the
Herbeners and their retrieved from storage furniture arrived at their new
home in Hillsdale almost simultaneously. Fortunately, or unfortunately,
there was no room for Kurt’s cradle, by now replaced by a larger daytime
bed, a bassinet with wheels, between the speakers. That “sound surrounded”
space was now occupied by a fireplace. |
