His father, Elman Kendrick Smading,  was a tanker sailor in WWII,
on the USS Tappahanock AO43. 
He commissioned the ship in 1942 and went to Guadacanal and other interesting places. 
He was a BM 2/c.

Genealogy
KENDRICK: 

Family in Chehalis (now Grays Harbor) County, Washington. Three sisters, daughters of ---- KENDRICK and Mary HEFRON in Ireland, Migrated Ireland Tacoma "Promised Land" North of Humptulips about 1880. Jennie KENDRICK m Frank FEHSE June 1893 in Tacoma, d May 7, 1897 on timber claim near Humptulips. Mary KENDRICK m Loren Elman SMADING d June 24, 1927. Kate KENDRICK d 1927 in Hoquiam, m (mike?)Cogdill. I am looking for birthplace of Kendrick sisters in Ireland.

Archived 4/30/00-"Who was your favorite or most memorable teacher?" 
And does anyone remember Miss Meyer (Jr High English) who drilled us at diagramming sentences? (Do they teach that anymore?) She retired after my freshman year (1960) after she had taught many of our parents before us.

I am pleased to see that someone else remembers Miss Meyer. I remember her with affection. She would read to us every day for about ten minutes, and then we would spend the rest of the period diagramming sentences. Thousands and thousands of sentences in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades. This was truly the brute force philosophy of teaching. Make the little beggars diagram sentences until they drop! Louise Meyer is still living in my head, making me diagram sentences whenever I write or speak.
